We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Cook to join our team at Active Explorers Kaiwharawhara. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing nutritious and balanced meals for tamariki under 5 in a safe and hygienic environment. You will play a vital role in promoting healthy eating habits and fostering a positive mealtime experience for our tamariki.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook a variety of nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with dietary guidelines and the centre’s menu.
  • Menu Planning: Collaborate with the Centre Manager and staff to develop a seasonal menu that meets the nutritional needs of children, taking into account allergies and dietary restrictions.
  • Food Safety: Maintain a high standard of food safety and hygiene practices in compliance with health regulations, including proper storage and handling of food.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor inventory levels, order supplies, and ensure that the kitchen is well stocked with necessary ingredients and equipment.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the kitchen clean and organised, ensuring all utensils and equipment are properly washed and stored.
  • Communication: Work closely with kaiako (Teachers) to understand children’s dietary needs and preferences, and to create a welcoming and enjoyable dining environment.
  • Education: Educate children about healthy eating habits and promote an appreciation for a variety of foods.

 

Background and Experience

  • Previous experience in cooking or food preparation, preferably in an early childhood or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and dietary needs for young children.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, and autonomously in a kitchen alone
