Are you passionate about food and understand the importance nutrition plays in the lives of our tamariki? At Active Explorers Blenheim we have a 6-month fixed-term parental leave contract available in our Centre. Located close to town and bordering the cricket ground and netball courts, Active Explorers Blenheim is a daycare that feels like a home away from home for the tamariki in our care.

As our new cook, you will be at the heart of our centre and our whanau, with the kitchen at your disposal. Our tamariki are looking for someone who will make delicious food that they will enjoy. Our tamariki love it when you talk to them about what you’re doing in the kitchen, and we love that you give them the fuel they need to get them through their busy day! You’ll be joining a warm and welcoming team - we are licenced for 83 tamariki in our purpose-built centre, and we have a large outdoor space with a vegetable garden and plenty of room to explore.

This contract will ideally start in June 2025 and run until approximately January 2025. You will work 5 days/ 32.5 hours per week, 6.5 hours per day so you’ll enjoy a great work/ life balance and a role that makes an impact every day.

In this role, you will be responsible for the complete management of the kitchen including:

  • Stock control and ordering.
  • Engagement with children and teachers at mealtimes.
  • Managing multiple different dietary requirements.
  • Cleanness of the kitchen area.
  • Menu planning.

What are we looking for in you?

  • You have menu preparation experience and ideally hold a current Food Safety and Hygiene Certificate (ideal, but not essential)
  • You can confidently follow food compliance regulations and undertake the associated paperwork and training.
  • You may also have experience cooking for large groups (previous experience in an early childhood centre would be advantageous but is not essential)
  • You are a passionate and intuitive cook, open and responsive to the constantly changing needs of our tamariki.
  • You are comfortable working autonomously and as part of a team (your day will encompass both).
  • You're calm under pressure and reliable.
  • You have strong written and spoken English language skills.
